Window seats are a wonderful solution to many of our interior design needs. They are a fantastic way of combining style with function. Two enthusiasts for the window seat are Interior Designer Oliver Heath and Architect George Clark. Clark goes as far to say they are ‘a wonderfully romantic place to be’. Unfortunately I can’t promise romance!
1. Make use of all your space
Every home has areas of space not living up to their full potential. Hallways, kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms can all benefit from adding a comfortable, luxurious window seat or booth. The area in front of a window is often unused space, adding a window seat creates a new dimension to the room.
2. Adds Storage and Comfort
This is an opportunity to use the space cleverly. Not only can you have a comfortable little nook to cosy up in. A window seat is an ideal way to add extra storage. Choose from fitted drawers, cupboard doors or a hinged bench top.
3. Mood boosting
We all know the positive health benefits of nature. Without even having to leave the house we can feel less stressed and more tranquil.
4. Add luxury and indulgence
An excuse to add more textiles is an opportunity to add richness to a room. Window seats can be dressed with lots of cushions. I like to layer different sized throw cushions and bolsters. This creates an inviting comforting space with a hint of extravagance!
5. Make the most of your bay windows
Window seats work equally well in little spaces and in more grand settings. Living in Glasgow we are spoilt when it comes to space around the window. With many tenements having large bay windows it is the perfect excuse to fit a window seat.
6. Be daring with fabric choices
I like to mix textures and pattern. It is a chance to be more daring, however try to stick to similar tones. Place pattern and solid colour together.
7. A perfect cosy space for reading
Snuggling up with a book and a view to the outside world sounds great to me. Sitting in a window seat can feel like more of an escape, a perfect spot to daydream. Children’s rooms can be greatly enhanced encouraging them to read more and providing essential extra storage. The storage area could be made into a book shelf creating a mini library.
8. Add your individuality to a room
Window seats are usually fitted to the space giving us greater freedom when designing our dream seating. Unlike buying other items of furniture we can use our creativity, try to be individual. The type of seat, storage space and the upholstery are all chances to experiment.
9. No need to buy extra dining chairs
Kitchen and dining areas hugely benefit from a window seat. They provide extra seating without taking up too much space. No need to look for those extra chairs when you’re having the Sunday roast.
10. Bring the outdoors indoors
Bringing more of a connection between the indoors and outdoors can make your home feel bigger and increase the natural light. Although adding a window seat does not change the design of your home it is definitely a start to making more of a connection to nature even if it is only a view to your back garden.
